We’ve all heard it or read it one time or another. Search engines take into account how often your site is updated, when it ranks you in the top ten. But how many of you have old sites sitting around that haven’t been updated in forever? I did. And unknowingly to me at the time I just used this simple technique to get serp boost!
You see, I had a site sitting around for almost over a year now that has steady traffic, ranks for it’s keywords in the top 10, but to be honest with you, I have no interest in the niche anymore. Every time I start working on that niche I end up wasting MONTHS on irrelevant “research”. Atleast that’s my excuse for playing video games…research honey, it’s for research.
A few days ago, I was updating a few WordPress blogs to 3.0, and decided to go ahead and do that old site as well. Result? Almost double the traffic. It was hanging out in position #3 for a keyword that I didn’t even know it was ranking for, and after the update it jumped to #1, and is getting about an extra 30-40 visitors per day now. Not huge, but definitely something that will convert into more sales in the long run.
I always thought that the “updating” would have to be posting a blog or something actually relevant, but obviously not. So if you have any old sites sitting around, consider adding an extra . where it’s not needing and updating that dinosaur. Sometimes your next . = $ in the bank.
